Meet Luke, one of our IT apprentices at Roke. Here he shares how his apprenticeship has helped him better understand decision making in the workplace.
Luke Milne, IT Project Manager, Roke
“An apprenticeship appealed to me, as I believe that the combination of hands on learning and academic learning is the best blend of experience, education, and support to enable success. At Roke, I appreciate the support given to apprentices as there is a dedicated apprenticeship manager and the company also has a very open and friendly culture.
“My apprentice role at Roke is in IT project management and my responsibilities include project planning, project delivery, reporting, and stakeholder management across a range of IT projects.
“So far, I have most enjoyed learning about project, programme and portfolio levels of work. It’s great to understand the decisions made at the macro level up top and the trickle-down impacts of these decisions. It’s helped me to build better reasoning as to why tasks are being completed across the levels.
“The stigma that once existed around apprenticeships has gone. If you are a practical learner or want to understand the applications of the theory you learn, the apprenticeship route is a great option.”
