Meet the apprentice - Emily

Meet Emily, one of our engineering apprentices at Roke. Here she shares the benefits of gaining hands-on practical experience in the workplace.

Emily Best, Technical Engineering Apprentice / STEM Site Co-ordinator, Roke

“When I joined Roke as an apprentice, I became part of their Graduate Development Programme. In the programme, we are assigned to technical projects like any other engineer but for less time, allowing us to attend university for one day a week.

“Alongside my main role, I’m also part of the Romsey STEM Site Co-ordinator team where I build and maintain relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, such as local schools, STEM Ambassador hubs, Roke Marcomms and Recruitment.

“The apprenticeship appealed to me as it provides the opportunity to gain hands on experience, putting what I’ve learnt at university into practice in the workplace. So far, the most challenging part of my apprenticeship has been balancing work, university, and general life - especially during assessment periods.

“I would encourage others to consider an apprenticeship. It’s a great start for your career, as not only do you work towards a qualification such as a degree, but you also gain years of experience in the workplace which can’t be replicated at university.”
